Obituary

At Martinsville Sunday, August 17, 1902 at 7 a. m. Dr. J. D. MARTIN aged 88 years. So passes after a long and useful life, one of the best known and best loved men in this part of Texas.

Dr. MARTIN was a distinguished physician. He resided for a few years in Nacogdoches but most of his life has been spent at Martinsville which was named in his honor. He was unusually admired for his unswerving integrity, and was a man of wide influence. Sorrow touched him very nearly in his later days. The death of his daughter Ida, in the bright bloom of her girlhood, was a shock from which he never recovered, and only a few short weeks ago the wife of his youth slipped away to the land o' the leal. Weary with the cares of life and the weight of over four score years, his strength failed and he has gone to join his loved ones in the unknown land. Dr. MARTIN leaves a large family of grown sons and daughters to mourn his loss and revere his memory, and innumberable friends who remember his example and to whom he is an honored memory. The last time he was in Nacogdoches, he spoke of his death saying that he knew it was only a question of days. He faced it fearlessly as a brave man should, settling all his business affairs and leaving nothing to be done after his death. He died in the fullness of years promised to good men. The world is better for such men as he having lived in it, and the good he has done will live after him. Requiesca? in peace.

John Daniel Martin founded Martinsville, Texas in Nacogdoches. It was first known as Martin's Mill but there was another post office with that name, so it was changed. Postmasters: Robert B. Crawford, 10-25-1867 and John D. Martin, 12-9-1874.

He came to Nacogdoches around 1855. He owned land bounded by Walker, E. Main, Hospital and Mound. In 1866 he moved and started Martinsville.

He was admired for his unswerving integrity. A man of wide influence. Some of the most beautiful balls and parties in the county were held at his stately home.
