BANDISH, BERNARD J.

Captain Bernard J. Bandish, SC, USN (Ret.), died peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2008, following a brief illness.

Captain Bandish was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1923. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1947. He earned a Masters Degree in Business Management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Captain Bandish spent most of his distinguished 28-year career in the Supply Corps, specializing in Fuel Supply and the Navy Exchange System. His military decorations included the Department of Defense Meritorious Service medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the American Theater Medal, the World War Two Victory medal, and the European Occupation Medal.

Captain Bandish and his family moved to San Diego in 1970, where he served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Exchange Service Center until his retirement in 1974. He spent the next twelve years in a second career as Distribution Director for the thirteen Walker Scott Department Stores in Southern California.

Among his many accomplishments in his civilian years, he established a credit union for Walker Scott and served on the Board of Directors for the North Island Federal Credit Union. His volunteer activities included preparing tax returns at Catholic Charities. He was an active supporter of Disabled American Veterans, serving as their Board's Vice President at the time of his death.

Captain Bandish is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of 61 years; his four children, Bernard J. Bandish, Jr., Andrew J. Bandish, Paul J. Bandish, and Stephanie J. Root; and his grandson, Nicholas B. Root.

Captain Bandish will be accorded full Military Honors at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2008.
