Henry A. Bachmann was the son of Daniel and Barbara Berger Bachmann. His mother died when he was four. His father then married Helena Frantz, and the family moved to Kansas where they settled in Garden Township between Halstead and Moundridge. Henry was baptized on Apr. 27, 1884 in the Mennonite Church of Christian. In 1893 at age 25 he enrolled at Bethel College where he graduated from the academy in 1897.
In 1897 - 1898 he taught school in Mountain Lake, Minn. Besides teaching Bachmann also preached at the Butterfield Mennonite Church on Sundays.
On June 5, 1900 at Paso Robles, California, he was ordained to the ministry.
On June 6, 1900 he was married to Emma Krehbiel of Donnelson, Iowa, by Rev. Jacob Hege of Paso Robles, Cal. In 1901 they accepted a call to come back to Mountain Lake, Minnesota, where Henry preached and taught school again for two years.
In 1903 he was offered the principalship of the new school at Freeman, South Dakota. He with Dr. John R. Thierstein developed this school as it became the Freeman Junior College. In 1910 - 1911 Bachmann's services as head of the school ended by his failing health. In 1915 the family moved to California. However, Bachmann's health did not improve there, and he died on August 5, 1920 and was laid to rest in the Reedley cemetery.
The Bachmann's first son was born at Mountain Lake and died when four weeks old. Three more children (Paula, Esther and Henry Jr.) were born while the family lived at Freeman, South Dakota. Mrs. Bachmann died on December 15, 1965 at Woodlake, California, at age of 94, and was laid to rest beside her husband in the Reedley cemetery.
Rev. Bachmann made significant contributions as a minister of the Gospel and especially as a pioneer educator during the years that he was associated with Freeman Junor College.
