Warren was a PFC in the Army Air Forces during the late stages of World War II. He graduated from the University of Houston. He married Melva June Randle in 1950 in Houston. In 1956, Warren and Melva moved from his family home on Rusk St. in Houston to the new suburb of Spring Branch. The longtime Holmes family home was lost to the continuing expansion of Houston freeways. In Spring Branch, they raised their 3 children, Eleanor, Bradley, and Karen.
Warren worked as a chemist at Cook Paint and Varnish Company. He was a member of the Houston Society for Paint Technology. Shortly after being promoted to research manager, Warren became ill with lung cancer that moved to his brain. He died at age 47.
