Gunder Salverson left Norway bound for California's gold fields in the 1850's. He settled at Fort Jones in Siskiyou County. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private at Fort Jones October 7, 1863, and was mustered into Company F, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers, February 19, 1864. Private Salverson was mustered out at Camp Lincoln, California, June 9, 1865. After the war he returned to Fort Jones where he took the oath of citizenship May 15, 1867. Gunder remained a resident of Fort Jones until 1907. Gunder filed for a Civil War veteran's pension September 1, 1890, and received application No. 948,482 and certificate No. 700,462. He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, California, from Fort Jones March 23, 1907. He was discharged from the Soldiers' Home at his own request March 2, 1908, and went to Bygland, Minnesota, where he died less than a year later. His pension file indicates he was single.
