The military records of William C. Tolman do show him as Tallman, as do other records of the time, although other also show Talman or Tolman.

He was the son of Seth Tolman and grandson of John Tolman, about whom there was no confusion about the name. His widow used the name Tolman except when signing papers having to do with her pension, when she used Tallman to satisfy the officials. His children, Charles Seth (my grandfather) and Carrie Jane always used Tolman.
