Columbus Ware "Doc" Stegall was the son of Jeremiah Green Stegall and Margaret Clementine Morrison Stegall.

During the Civil War, he served in Hodges, Company A., Miss. Reg. 41, CSA.

Shortly after the war, he fell in love with a neighbor, Sarah Jane Ward. When her Uncle came to take her to his home in Iuka, Miss. so that she could pursue her education, young "Doc" followed behind and when the Uncle pitched camp for the night, he & Sarah eloped and rode to Saltillo (Itawamba Co.) and were married on December 21, 1866.

To this couple, eleven children were born. Three of these children did not live to adulthood - Jeremiah "Jerry" Stegall was killed in a gin accident at the age of 12; Edna died of dropsy at the age of six; and one baby was stillborn. There children were: 1) William Thomas; 2) John Samuel; 3) James Solomon; 4) Jeremiah Green; 5) Columbus Ware; 6) Jesse Andrew; 7) Sarah Edna; 8) Dora Lee; 9) Beulah Evans; 10) Lottie May and 11) Baby Stegall.

In his youth, "Doc" Stegall professed religion and united with the Missionary Baptist Church of which faith he remained true to the last. Honest in his dealings, upright in character, fair and just in his personal opinions, he was highly regarded by his friends and neighbors as a good man, a splendid citizen. He owned and operated a large farm, along with a gin & blacksmith shop, making a success of all three ventures.
