Spc. Chris M. Talbert, 24, of Galesburg, Illinois, attended Knoxville High School from 1999-2001 and graduated from Galesburg Christian School in 2003. Growing up Chris was a bit of a handful and bored easily. He had some trouble figuring out what exactly he wished to do with his life. He attended Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois Central College in Peoria, and was currently enrolled in Blackhawk College in Moline furthering his studies to be a paramedic. He had completed training as an EMT and was employed as a phlebotomist at Galesburg Cottage Hospital and a certified nurse's aide. He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Alpha Lodge 155. Chris enlisted in the Illinois National Guard in 2007, something he did to turn his life around and make his parents even prouder of him. Finding what he was searching for in life by his service to his country, his big heart happy with the knowledge that he was defending the freedom our country embraces. Chris was lots of fun, a wonderful practical joker, very sweet and always thinking of others. He deeply loved his family, friends, country and the children who he knew in his town. Chris deployed to Afghanistan as a medic, part of the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) in September to provide security for Embedded Training Teams, Police Mentor Teams and Forward Operating Bases. He died July 7 in Shindad, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He looked forward to re-enlisting and being deployed to Egypt next year. Chris is survived by his parents Terry Steven and Amanda Jean Talbert of East Galesburg; and two brothers, Larry "Andy" Kuykendall of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Jeff Kuykendall, North Port, Alabama. He is further survived by countless friends and an entire community who loved and respected him. Christopher would want all to understand that the people who took his life, did so because they hate the fact we live in a free country, and he was there to defend that.
