Martha Williams was married to John Brown in Harrison Co., OH, 8 November 1827. In 1830, they were living in southern Jefferson Co., OH, and in about 1838 they migrated to IL. They settled briefly in Fulton Co., where one child, Lewis H. W. Brown, was born. They then settled in Madison Co., near its boundary with Bond Co., by 1845. They remained in this vicinity for the rest of their lives.
An obituary of their son Lewis states that his family returned briefly to OH when he was a child, but does not state when, whether it was before or after the family settled in Madison Co. Possibly it was when the family left Fulton Co. and prior to their settlement in Madison Co., but that is not a certainty.
Martha was the mother of 8 known children, 6 of whom were still living when she died. I had assumed that her husband, John, had died c. 1879 since he is nowhere found in the 1880 census, and was buried next to her. This is not the case- he died living among his children who lived at Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas, and was buried on the family plot of his daughter, Martha Goodman.

Inscription

In Memory of/ MARTHA/ wife of John Brown/Born/ Feb. 15, 1807/ Died/ Oct. 10, 1876
There are two sections of verse at the bottom of the stone, separated by an inscribed line.
The first is a version of 2 Timothy, 4:7
"I have fought a good fight/ I have finished my course/ I have kept my faith."
The second section of verse I have not attempted to decipher yet.

Gravesite Details

The original footstone survives, probably because it's been shoved down into the ground far enough to not impede mowing. As with many old graves, the footstone is BEHIND the headstone, the grave being behind the headstone,
