ALFRED CAMPBELL was born in Tennessee, but since his parents are unproven, at this time, the exact location is unknown.

By the 1830 Census of Bedford Co., TN, Alfred was married to Sarah Reaves, the oldest daughter of Archibald Reaves, Sr. and Elizabeth Caldwell. He was the father of a son and a daughter, owned a farm in the Flat Creek area, and owned one female Slave.

Over the next 3 decades, Alfred was busy buying and selling several parcels of land; suing for debts owned him; was the Executor and Administrator of the Estate of Jane Reynolds, widow of Richard Reynolds; and was involved in at least two Lawsuits against William Campbell and Williams' s father Arthur Campbell.

Alfred and Sarah had 9 known children:
Sons: Name unknown, b. abt 1829, died before 1850
Robert, b. abt 1837, died before 1865
Thomas J. 1842-1864
Daughters:
Martha, m. Milton Alexander Reagor
Mary, b. abt 1833, m. William W. Stanfield
Caledonia, b. abt 1839, died before 1865
Susan Caroline, m. Harmon Henry Landess
Fanny, b. abt 1842, m. James Baker
Catherine “Kate”, m. Calvin Newton Pearson Nov 20, 1866

By the 1860 Census Alfred was fairly wealthy. His real estate was valued at $18,000 and his personal property was valued at $15,200, which included the value of the 7 male and 6 female Slaves he owned that year.

Alfred died 17 months after the start of the Civil War. After his death, the War brought two tragedies to his family, both later in the year 1863..
On June 7, 1863, four Companies of the Union Army's 5th TN Calvary captured Shelbyville, the county seat of Bedford. The Confederates retreated across the Duck River, with the 5th TN in pursuit. According to a January 1865 lawsuit, Alfred's house, and all his papers, were destroyed by soldiers of the 5th TN.

His son-in-law, Milton Alexander Reagor, husband of Martha, enlisted in Monroe’s 1st Arkansas Calvary, CSA. He was killed in 1863, and is supposed to be buried near Little Rock, AR.

In January 1865, a lawsuit was filed against Alfred’s Estate. It named his living heirs: wife Sarah, daughters Mary, Martha, (Susan) Caroline, Fanny and Catherine (Kate).

Alfred is buried here with his wife, son Thomas, and daughter Martha Reagor. Other children/relatives are probably buried here but many tombstones are too damaged to read.
