George married Emily Elizabeth Kizer on 18 Dec 1862 in Montgomery County, Missouri. They raised a family of 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys, in the Lincoln County, Missouri area

George W. enlisted in the Union Army Sept. 3, 1861 at Louisiana, Missouri. and was a musician in Co. E, Fifth Reg. as a 6-month volunteer. He was mustered out Feb. 7, 1862. He also served in the State Militia, and on Aug. 11, 1864 at Wellsville, Missouri he enlisted as a private in Co. B, 49th Regular Infantry Volunteers under Capt. Stewart, and Col. D. P. Dyer. On Aug. 11, 1864, was promoted to First Lieutenant, and then he was promoted to Captain on March 22, 1865. He was mustered out on Aug. 2, 1865.
