He was the son of Jessie and Henrietta Hurley Shoemaker and came to Rapid City on July 4, 1876, only a few months after the town had been laid out, A few month later he returned saying "I couldn't leave my girl" They were married in Grand Island Aug 16, 1877. John made a trip to the Black Hills after they were married and Ellen joined him in 1879. making the trip by ox wagon with her husband Uncle Alex Shoemaker.
The family lived in Rapid City for eighteen years before moving to Lead and then to Cottonwood when the train arrived

. A daughter was born to he and his wife Ellen in Sept of 1881.
In 1890 the had four daughters Lucinda Maud, Grace and Dorothy, they lived in School District 4. Grace died June 16, 1897 at ST Martin's Academy in Sturgis.
In 1880 they have only a daughter Lucinda 2 years old, they are in Rapid City

When Ellen died she had two living daughters,Mrs Pearson of Belle Fourche and STurgis and Susie Smith in McCook Ne.
