Mrs. Sarah Bryant, a pioneer settler in Allen County, whose maiden name was Sarah Harris, was born in Hancock County, Illinois, 15 December 1842, died at her home 522 South Chestnut Street in Iola, Kansas on Wednesday, 18 May, at 5:20 a.m. at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 2 days.

She was united in marriage to Jeremiah Hecox in Adams County, Illinois on 19 February 1861. To this union was born six children, two of whom died in infancy, and John William living in western Kansas departed this life in April 1920 at the age of 55. Mrs. Nancy Jane Malcolme, Alfred Harris, and Frank Erwin Hecox live in Iola and were at her bedside during her last illness. Her first husband died 22 April 1883, and on 13 March 1884, she was united in marriage to Stephen Bryant.

Her husband lost a devoted companion, her children a model mother, her church a jewel, and her neighbors a friend indeed. She lived a life that spoke for itself leaving a monument of professional and moral examples that can well be patterned after. She joined the Primitive Church when eighteen years old and ever lived her faith. She, with her husband, came to Allen County in 1864 settling on a homestead 6 1/2 miles west of Iola where her life was spent until the spring of 1907 when they came to Iola where she lived the remainder of her life.
