Robert Verle Guess, 91, of Amarillo died Friday, July 3, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Chris Kutin, chief chaplain of Thomas E. Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center, officiating. Military honors will be by Fort Hood Army Base of Fort Hood. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St.

Staff Sgt. Guess was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Keokuk, Iowa. He served the U.S. Army during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from active duty in 1969 at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio after 25 years of honorable service.

He enjoyed playing the piano and spending time at home. He was a member of Manor Baptist Church in San Antonio and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He moved to Amarillo in 2001 from San Antonio.

He married Marjorie Carr in 1936 at Carthage, Ill. She preceded him in death in 2001.

Survivors include a son, Robert B. Guess and wife Catherine of Amarillo; three daughters, Bonnie Myers and Janis Moore, both of Amarillo, and Virginia Barker and husband Bob of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Doris Hancock of Claremore, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
