After the birth of her daughter Mildred, she suffered from depression, resulting in hospitalization for much of her married life. Mildred Irving was raised by her grandparents, Jeremiah K. and Catherina (Schmidt) Chandler and Catherine (Sottong) Schmidt, her great grandmother.
