Paul was raised on a farm in Michigan by his father and grandfather after his mother died when he was 13 years old. Like many young men in the World War II era, Paul fabricated his age in order to serve his country in the United States Navy. He served in Special Services of the Armed Guard as a Gunners Mate in Europe and South Pacific until he was honorably discharged. Paul pursued many different occupations varying from working on the railroad to being a painter. Paul later became a bartender in Chicago, and then owned a bar and restaurant in the industrial area of Chicago.
In August 1957, Paul married Doris Brough at her mother's home in Rochester, Minn. He retired in 1986 due to health reasons and lived in their home in Fish Lake, Ind., until he moved to Hokah in 1989. Paul was very happy in this part of the country. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and spending time with dear friends until he was no longer able to indulge in these activities. Paul was a member of VFW in Brownsville, Minn., and Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post No. 595 of La Cresent, Minn. He had also been a member of Hokah Lions Club and a Hokah Council member for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Doris; a daughter, Candace Summers of North Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, James (Yoshiko) Brough of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Joseph (Margaret) Brough of Blaine, Minn.; a niece by marriage, Michelle (Mark) Rogers; and three nephews by marriage, Larry (Vika) Brough, Joseph (Angela) Brough and Tony (Denise) Brough; great-nieces, Christine and Ellen Brough; a great-nephew, Joseph John Brough, from whom he enjoyed visits; and the first pet cat he owned which was named by him, CAT.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents.
In accordance with his wishes, Paul will be cremated, and memorial services will be held at a later date in July and will be announced by Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse.
