A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 26, for retired Air Force Col. James Philo Hagerstrom, 73, of Mansfield, Louisiana.

Mr. Hagerstrom died Saturday, June 25, in the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Hospital in Shreveport. His wife is the former Virgie Lee Jowell, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jowell of Frankston.

Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Mr. Hagerstrom, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was a double ace. He earned six air-to-air victories flying propellor-driven aircraft in World War II, and then bagged eight-and-a-half more flying jets in the Korean War.

After his retirement in early 1968, he and his wife, Virginia, also a World War II pilot with the WASP'S, bought a boat and sailed down the west coast of Mexico with seven of their eight children. Later, the couple built a boat and sailed to the South Pacific with four of their childen. They lived eight years in the Marshall Islands, then spent three years on Guam. They moved to Mansfield a few years ago to be closer to their oldest daughter, Mitchell Hagerstrom.

Col. Hagerstrom's honors include the nation's second-highest medal, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with five oak-leaf clusters, the Air Medal with 10 oak-leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one-oak leaf cluster, the Republic of Vietnam Medal of Honor. He earned 16 awards and decorations in his career.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia L. (Virgie Lee) Jowell Hagerstrom of Mansfield; two sons, Eric James Hagerstrom of Arlington, Va. ande Mark Vincent Hagerstrom of Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Mitchell Anne Hagerstrom of Mansfield, Kristin Marie Hagerstrom of Mexico City, Mexico, Teresa Lee Hagerstrom of Tunis, Tunisia and Stasia Lee Hagerstrom of San Francisco, California; six grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
