Garland V. Hart, 85, a resident of Churubusco, and formerly of Fort Wayne, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2007, at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City. He had been taken there earlier in the week from Miller's Merry Manor, where he had been a resident for the past year and a half.
Born in Fort Wayne on July 10, 1921, a son of John E. and Anna G. (Aurand) Hart, he spent his formative years there.
As a young man he served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes with the U.S. Army during World War II. During his military service he was awarded five Bronze Stars with Bronze Arrowhead, the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.
Following his military discharge he was married to Wanda L. Kumfer on Feb. 16, 1946, in Fort Wayne. He lived all his adult life in Fort Wayne until moving to Churubusco in 2000.
He was employed as a lead man with American Hoist in Fort Wayne for 32 years, retiring in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda, to whom he was married for more than 61 years; his children, John (Cathy) Hart of Churubusco and Roger (Leslie) Hart of Warsaw; and Debbie Hart of Fort Wayne; a brother, Cletus Hart of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Hart and Tom Hart; and two sisters, Eva Crow and Marcile Minor.
The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Friday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco, with the Rev. Lane Burgland, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, or one hour prior to the service Friday. Interment, with military graveside rites, is at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Fort Wayne.
