Rachel was one of 11 children of Jacob and Catherine Zeigler who migrated to Alabama with eight of them from Orangeburg in 1818. She stayed behind to marry Jacob Culler, a wealthy landowner who had a 7,000-acre plantation. They had two children before she died at a young age.
