Clifton Looses Prominent Woman
Mrs. Maggie Mayo, Wife of Porter Mayo and Mother of M. E. Mayo Dies Friday Aged 90 years.

The funeral of Mrs. Maggie Mayo, wife of Porter Mayo, and both Randolph County's oldest and most prominent citizens, who died at her home in Clifton Hill, at 8:30 o'clock Friday evening January 4, 1929, after an illness of about ten days was held at the Baptist Church at Clifton Hill, Mo. at two o'clock Sunday afternoon January 6, 1929, conducted by the pastor Rev. W. E. Davis, assisted by the Methodist pastor, Rev. C. E. Davis.

Not withstanding the extreme cold day, a large crowd was present.

Rev. Davis preached a most splendid sermon, taking for his text the 21st chapter of Rev. and the 4th verse, reading as follows: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.

The choir consisting of Rev. C. E. Davis, Mrs. Jessie Crutchfield and daughter, Mary V., Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Bybee and daughter Helen, Mrs. Forest Brockman, Mrs. Dan Cobb, Mrs. Ben Martin, Miss Elta
Eubank, and Mrs. John Friday, assisted by Miss Minnie Friday as pianist, sang pretty and favorite songs of the deceased.

Undertaker Minor and son were flower bearers.

The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased namely:-G. P. Dameron, Huntsville, Jim Sark, Fay Mayo, Joe Richeson, Frank Patton, and Walter Richeson of Clifton Hill. Burial was in the Clifton Hill Cemetery.

Among those from out of town present were Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Frisbee of Kansas City, Mrs. Althea Karr of Kansas City, Mrs. Ralph Summers of Liberal, Kansas, Leland Frisbee of Detroit, Michigan, Joe Ingram and Cliff Jackson of Salisbury, Powell Newby and wife and mother Mrs. S. N. Newby, Mr. and Mrs. Van Davis, G. P. Dameron, Mrs. W. T. Dameron, and W. M. Evans and daughter Miss Lela Evans of Huntsville, Mo.

This coming March 19, 1929 Mr. and Mrs. Mayo would have celebrated their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary. Mr. Mayo celebrated his ninety first birthday this lst November the seventeenth.

Mrs. Mayo's maiden name was Maggie Cynthia Stark, daughter of William and Catherine Stark of near Mt. Airy. She was born September 6, 1839 and was 90 years, 3 months and 29 days of age. March 19, 1893 she was married to Porter Mayo of near Mt. Airy, one of Randolph County's oldest and most prominent families. To their union six children were born, four of whom besides her husband survive namely:- Mrs. J. B. Frisbee of Kansas City, Mo., T. R. and M. E. Mayo of Clifton Hill, and L. A. Mayo of Turlock, California. The other two children Mary Ann and William Porter, having preceded her in death. Two sisters also survive her, Mrs. J. H. Minor of Chicago, Ill. and Mrs. J. D. Richeson of Clifton Hill, and six grandchildren, Ruth Stuttgart of Arkansas, Norris Mayo of St. Charles, Ia., Mrs. Ralph Summers of Liberal, Kansas, Mrs. Althea Karr of Kansas City, J. B. Frisbee, Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Leland M. Frisbee of Detroit, Michigan, and three great grandchildren, John, Lois and Dorothy Summers and a host of other friends and relatives.

She united with the Silver Creek Baptist Church at the age of 44 amd was baptized by her brother, Rev. F. M. Stark and later transferred her membership to the Clifton Hill Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until death.

Mr. and Mrs. Mayo began their early married life on a farm two miles and half south of Clifton Hill. Mr. Mayo first built a one room log house and later build a more substantial one, which is still standing. They first began with 80 acres of farm land and increased it later to 280 acres. Mr. Mayo was a successful stock raiser and farmer. They remained on this farm until 1910, when they moved to Clifton Hill, where they resided until the present time.

Porter Mayo was married to Miss Maggie C. Stark, March 19, 1863. She was bom in Randolph County, Sept. 6,
1838. To Mr. and Mrs. Mayo have been born the following children: Mary Ann, born Jan. 8, 1864 and died Sept. 2, 1865; Minnie Florence, born Feb. 12, 1866, married J. B. Frisbie, Kansas City, Mo.; Thomas Rector, bom April 10, 1868, lives at Clifton Hill, Mo.; Martin Edgar, born Dec. 11, 1869, lives three miles northeast of Clifton Hill; Lewis Allen, bom Nov. 27, 1871, lives in California and William Porter, born Aug. 14, 1873 and died Jan. 13, 1910. Mr. and Mrs. Mayo have six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
