Fighter-Pilot Who Married Former Shirley Conway Dies on Operational Flight
1st Lt. Harold W. Long, 22, husband of the former Shirley Conway of this city, was killed while on an operational flight in the European area, according to word received here. He was fighter-pilot on a Thunderbolt.
COUPLE MARRIED LAST JANUARY
Mrs. Long, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Conway, 1114 W. Dominick St. was married to Lt. Long Jan.2 of this year.
Besides his wife, Lt. Long is survived by his Parents, Mr.and Mrs.Roy I. Long, Baytown, Tex. He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School of Baytown Tex. and took special courses at Lee Junior Collage. Upon completion of these studies he became a junior architectural designer.
Shortly after Pearl Harbor, he became a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, receiving his wings and commission as second lieutenant in October, 1942. He was assigned to tactical training on the eastern seaboard and was advanced to first lieutenant in March of this year.In May he was transferred to the European theater.
It was on one of his routine training flights to Rome Air Depot that Lt. Long met the Rome girl who became his bride.
