"JAMES DENNIS
In 1871, James DENNIS and his family came by train from Geneseo, Illinois to Shenandoah, Iowa. Their first home was where the library now stands. Later moving to a farm east of Shenandoah. From there they moved to a farm south of Essex.
His wife Emma died in 1873, and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. Susan HARVALE, a grandmother, cared for their family until her death in 1876, at the age of eighty-nine.
There were seven children. Calvin was married to Eva LINKLETTER and had one daughter, Emma. Marira wife of George RALPHE of Essex. They had one daughter, Edna, who married Berle RUTH. Myra was the wife of Sam BUSSARD; they had four children: Calvin, Fred, Hazel and Harry. Joel married Anna FALLERS. To this union three children were born Mary, Edna, and Walter. Maude was the wife of Ike KILLION of Oakland, Iowa. Lucie was the wife of Dan BURKHALTER of Lewis, Iowa.
Walter DENNIS, his son Max, and his son Joel, of Farragut, Iowa are the last of the James DENNIS family to survive to carry on the DENNIS name.
Farming has been the occupation of most of this family. Submitted by Joel DENNIS."
