When David arrived in Vietnam 29 May 1968, he was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, USARV. B Company was operating in the vicinity of Darlac Province, southwest of Plei Me and 24 kilometers east northeast of Dan Dan Airfield, when B Company encountered hostile forces. David died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile small arms fire. The company lost a total of 4 men, during the engagement against hostile forces.
Survived by his step-father and mother, Walter and Lorraine D Eklund, his siblings and half-siblings, Mike, Vickie, Denise, Julie, Diane and James of 4434 41st Avenue, South, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
