Stanley Jay Bennett, 77, of Sterling, died June 12, 1992 at Rose Arbor Manor, Sterling.
Mr. Bennett was born to Leslie and Jenny Bennett on Oct. 16, 1914 in Ovid, Colo. He graduated from Ovid High School and attended Barnes Business School in Denver after graduation.
He married Lois Eileen Johnson on July 26, 1942, in Sidney, Neb. The couple returned to Ovid and operated the hotel and restaurant in town from 1943-1950. Moving to Sterling in 1950 they bought the Blue Bird Restaurant and operated it until the middle 1960's when they sold it to Don Goering. The couple built the Blue Bird Motel that is across the street from where the restaurant used to be. They also started Round-Up Music Which was sold to Harry and Sandy Heaston 14 years ago. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post No. 20, Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336, Masonic Lodge No. 54, A.F. & A.M. He was a past commander, district commander, and adjutant for many years for the Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of Sterling; sisters Violet Harring ton, of Glendale, Ca.; Dorothy Wagner of Denver and son,Edward J. Bennett and wife Joy of Tempe Ariz. Grandchildren: Cathy Bennett of Sterling; Cris Sprague, of Sterling; Edward Martin of Sterling; Susan Heaston of Fort Morgan and Jennie Bennett of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also survived by three great grandsons and Harry and Sandi Heaston of Sterling.
Military graveside services will be at Sterling American Legion Post No. 20. Funeral will be June 16, at 2 p.m. at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home by Rev. Ivan E.Rundus. Burial Sunset Memorial Gardens.
