According to the census records, John B. was born in Illinois. His parents was traveling from Ohio and stayed in the state long enough for John and his sister to be born there. By the Summer of 1854, they had moved on to Iowa were the remaining children were born. The couple had over a dozen children, although two died at an early age. John's parents remained in Iowa, but he migrated to northeast Nebraska in March 1892.

The year before he left, John married Harriet Ethlyn Brown also born in Iowa whose father was from Ohio. They settled in Clark Twp., Dixon County, where John built a home and they raised their six children who were all born in Iowa.

John was active in his community in many areas. His hard work earned him the respect of his fellow farmers and other associates. He was involved in establing a phone system in Dixon County just before his death. It may have been in use so his family could alert the doctor when his seventeen-year-old son found him dead.

Like his son, other than some posed shots, few pictures exist of John B. Lisle. He is buried with his wife in Concord Cemetery.
