Catherine was the last born of 11 children. She grew up at 715 Oxford St in North Danville VA. She was active in church and enjoyed singing. Her father ran a grocery store on North Main St. After it closed during the depression, her mother ran a small store at the home. It was there she met her future husband Ed Cassidy when he came to buy kerosene. He was a carpenter by trade. They were married in Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church on North Main July 26 1941 and moved to Newport News where he was working. The following year they moved back to Danville and their first child Dolores was born in Danville in August. With the war raging, the family moved to Portsmouth VA in 1943 where Ed went to work in the Navy Yard and they lived in Alexander Park. Daughter Sandy was born in Portsmouth in 1945. At the close of the war and the reduction in force at NNSY, the family moved back to Danville and lived in Mountain Hill near family. Ed went to work for Dan River Mills as a carpenter. The red neon Mills sign that sat on top of the mill at Riverside was erected and constructed by Ed. Another daughter Deborah was born in Danville in 1952. With the increased work at the shipyard due to the Korean War, Ed was recalled to work and the family returned to Portsmouth in 1952. In 1953, the fourth and last child, a long awaited son Ed Jr. was born. The family bought a home on Biltmore Place in Portsmouth and Ed and Cat lived there for many years. Cat worked for Irwin's Pharmacy for many years. They were members of Biltmore Baptist Church. Following Ed's death in 1975, Catherine met Harold Hostetler Sr and they were married in the Bahamas in 1982 with Harold Jr. attending. Widowed a 2nd time, Catherine moved to a senior apartment, then lived with her daughter until her health failed and she was in a nursing home for 8 months before she died at age 84.
