Military figure. He was born in a Russian emigrant family in Belgium, where he joined the army. He went on to found and commanding what became known as 'Popski's Private Army'. This unit carried out a number of brave missions behind enemy lines in North Africa and Italy between 1942 and 1945. He was awarded the Military Cross on 26 November 1942, and on 26 April 1945 he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). He described the events in the book he called 'Popski's Private Army'.
