Irene C. Powell went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2009. She was born August 2, 1908 to her parents, Benjamin S. and Narcissus P. Center. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the widow of Wilbur M. "Red" Powell who passed away in 1994. They were married for 59 years. She is survived by two daughters, Shelby Cromer and her husband, Aaron of the home and Glenda "Susie" Allen and husband, Robert "Artie" of Spartanburg, three grandchildren, Lynne Pawlak and husband Steve of Mayflower, AR, Aaron Scott Cromer of Spartanburg, and Melinda Moore and husband John of Spartanburg, a one nephew, Claude Center and wife Lib of Duncan and one niece Dot Arms of Lyman.

She was a homemaker and taking care of her family was her priority. She had a great love for flowers and gardening. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a choir member, flower chairperson, and secretary of her Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 2:00pm at Mount Zion Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Monty King and Rev. James Crocker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is at the home and will receive friends 1-2:00pm Saturday, May 30 in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 842 Mt. Zion Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303
