From the Palmer (Nebraska) Journal, February 9, 1933, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney:

George M. Wherrett was born in Hancock, Illinois, March 21, 1871 and moved with his parents to Nebraska, locating in Merrick County near Palmer where he grew to manhood. While a young man he became an engineer and secured a position with the Burlington Railroad which he held for twenty years. He met with a serious accident while holding this position which caused him to retire from railroading. He came to Callaway while recuperating and lived with his sister, Mrs. Chas. Curtis, for over a year. While here he made many friends by his genial manner and friendly disposition.

On October 16, 1920 he was married to Mrs. Mabel Holmes of Kearney. Soon after their marriage they moved to Modesto, California, where they resided till December 1922, she was called to the great beyond. Mr. Wherrett continued to reside there till January 24, after a long illness he died. Funeral services were conducted by the Masonic lodge from Shannon Funeral Parlors in Modesto, California.

He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Curtis of Callaway and Mrs. Cornelia Baird of Ceres, California, and one half brother, Fred Parrott of Collbran, Colorado, and one step son, Charles Holmes of Berkley, California.

The many friends of Mr. Wherrett in this community extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives. -- Callaway Queen
