First minister and early settler of Watertown, Massachusetts. He came to America in 1630 on the ship Arbella with Rev John Winthrop, being one of the only persons named in Winthrop's writings of the journey. In a letter to his son Winthrop wrote, "From aboard the Arabella, riding before Yarmouth, April 5, 1630. Yesterday we kept a fast aboard our ship and in the Talbot. Mr. Phillips exercised with us the whole day, and gave very good content to all the company, as he doth in all his exercises, so as we have much cause to bless God for him." Rev Phillips' wife died in Salem shortly after his arrival. She was buried in that town. Phillips and his first wife had two children, Samuel & Elizabeth, both who were born in England. In July 1630, Phillips relocated to Watertown and continued in his ministerial role until his death 14 years later. He married a second time in 1632 to Elizabeth _______. The couple had seven children: Zerobabel, Jonathan, Theophilus, Annabel, Ephraim, Obadiah and Abigail. He died in Watertown in 1644.
