Ted loved animals, especially horses, and he rode as a jockey many years. He once adopted a stray antelope fawn who would sit on the couch with him in the evening and watch TV together. When it was bedtime, he would have to grab him by the horns to drag him outside for the night, because it didn't want to leave him. As told to Carol Bishop by Pam Deter Whelden.

He was born Dec. 13, 1911 three miles north of Deer Trail on the FIL Ranch to Phillip Deter Sr. and Julia (O'Connor) Deter. He attended school at the Price Ranch on the Bijou, he graduated from the eighth grade in Deer Trail. With the exception of one year (1928) in California, where he worked for a dairy and sometimes for a deputy sheriff. In 1933, he married Lora May Bishop of Deer Trail, in Brush, Colo. He rode in the 4th of July Rodeo the next day. They lived in Colorado Springs from 1934 to 1937.
Ted worked at the Broadmoor and one time he rode a camel from the rail yard to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. They moved back to Deer Trail in 1937 to a ranch two miles north of Deer Trail in Arapahoe County and also owned a pasture in Elbert County until 1972 when he sold out and moved to a small irrigated farm north of Fort Lupton in Weld County.
Ted had a great love for animals. He was always bringing in orphaned and sick animals to his kids.
Ted did a lot or rodeoing, riding bareback horses and bulls. Quarter horse racing was one of favorite sports which he pursued the last few years at Centennial and Arapahoe Park and the Colorado Fair Circuit. He did very well with numerous first place pictures and many times in the money. He first raced "Pidlin" a registered quarter horse mare, Zippers Talent and Fifth Moon, who won several times. He also raced in Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming and Oklahoma.
Ted also bar-b-qued with his long time friend, Lloyd Clark, doing turkey shoots, beef expos, and other functions. He enjoyed elk and antelope hunting with all his friends.
He was a charter member of the Deer Trail Elks, Deer Trail Jockey Club, Deer Trail Fire District and the Masons at Byers, Colo.
He is survived by his wife, Lora of 63 years; one son Doug Deter of New Raymer; Three Daughters, Pam Whelden and husband Leroy of Deer Trail, Maureen Johnson and husband Ralph of Agate and Boni Freeman and husband Gus of Briggsdale; seven grandchildren, Brenda Taylor, Cherylene Caver, Bud and Dena Johnson, Kim Swanson, Jackie Minton and Cristi Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Cody Caver; two sisters, Clara Hanks of Deer Trail and Maria Garrison of Limon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and seven children and one grandson, Wade Whelden.
