Son of Eli Thomas and Elizabeth Anna Fore Stackhouse. James married (1) Florence McAlister, and (2) Rhema Bach.

"Son of Colonel E. F. and Anne Fore Stackhouse. Born the 17th of January, 1849, near Marion, South Carolina. Ancestors were of Scotch and French descent and among the early settlers of Marion County. Attended the common schools and took a partial course at the South Carolina Military Academy, leaving to enter the army. Married Florence E. McAllester on June 8, 1871. He was mayor of Marion several years [1876 to 1880]. Represents Marion County in the State Senate by more than three-fourths of vote of entire county. [Was reelected in 1904.] He is also a dealer in agricultural supplies." - Published in Men of the Time: Sketches of Living Notables, 1902
