Bertha Estes Dies Saturday

Bertha M. Estes, the first queen of the Pendleton Round-Up and a resident of Walla Walla since 1915, died Saturday evening at local hospital. She was 81.

Born Sept. 23, 1888 in Minneapolis, Minn., she moved to Pendleton with her parents, Frank and Alice Anger, in 1890. She was queen of the 1910 Round-Up in Pendleton, the first year the now nationally famous event was held in that city.

She was married to Roxy Estes Nov. 11, 1915 in Walla Walla. The couple farmed near Prescott until his Death March 7, 1958. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Estes moved to Clinton Court in Walla Walla.

Mrs. Estes was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Court St. Cecelia 668, C. D. A., Lady Elks 287, Prescott Study Club and the Prescott Home Ec Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Barbara Jean) Martin, Walla Walla, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Recitation of the Rosary is scheduled at 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Marshall-Herring Funeral Home. Requiem Mass is to be celebrated at 10 a. m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Charles Eis as celebrant. Concluding services and vault interment are to be in Elks Rest, Mt. View Cemetery.
