John Stewart married Mattie Claunch on 14 November 1874 in Waxahachie, Texas. The couple moved to Stephens County in 1884.
Services for J.A. Stewart, 77, a prominent farmer living 10 miles east of Breckenridge, joined his fellow pioneers in the great beyond. He died at the home of his son, C.A. Stewart. At the supper table last night Mr. Stewart was apparently in good health. He ate a hearty meal and retired to his room for a rest. He was suddenly taken ill and died before medical aid could reach his home. Mr. Stewart rode in a wagon and on horseback from Tennessee to Stephens County in 1887. He was one of the first to take up land in this section and battled the hardships of those days along with a mere handful of hardy pioneers. He had lived in the Ivan community for the greater part of his residence in Stephens County. Funeral services were held at the home of his son, C.A. Stewart with Rev. W.A. Clack officiating.
Survived by his wife; five children- C.A. Stewart, Mrs. Ida Fulton, Mrs. Ethel Hefner, all of Breckenridge; Mrs. J.E. Rollins of Oklahoma; W.A. Stewart of Haskell.
