John Buchanan Senior was born about 1725 possibly in Ireland or in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland. No absolute proof of his birth in either Ireland or Scotland has been found.

Although family researchers have tried to link John as a brother of President James Buchanan, this appears to be untrue. It is believed that there is a family connection but probably several generations back either in Ireland or Scotland. There are some written references to the John Buchanan family and President James Buchanan referring to their relationship as "cousins."

The following quote addresses the question of John Buchanan relationship to President James Buchanan and his being a descendant of Thomas Buchanan of Donegal, Ireland. It is part of an article "Ancestors of President Buchanan: Descendants of Thomas, of Donegal. by Patty Hopkinson." Patty is a long-time professional Buchanan researcher.
"President James Buchanan's genealogy has been fairly well established for a number of years. Many people have tried to closely tie their own lines into the Presidents line based on family legends and wishful thinking. . . Most of these family rumors tend to be untrue and mainly came about during the 1930's "Buchanan Estate Scam" where letters were sent out to anyone with the name Buchanan claiming they were entitled to a share of a nonexistent multi-million dollar estate. Often, these letters went on to claim that President Buchanan was at one time head of the Clan (blatantly untrue). Some of these letters stated that if you could claim close kinship to the President that your share of the estate would be larger. For anyone to even claim to be a third cousin of the President, they must be descended from Thomas Buchanan, of Donegal (or sometimes referred to as Thomas, of Rathmelton).

The following emigration record is possibly for John Buchanan Senior:
"Buchanan, John, b. 1725, servant, Jacobite, resided in Auchterarder Perthshire, transported 24 Feb 1747 from Liverpool to Virginia in Gildart, arrived Port North Potomac Maryland 5 Aug 1747."

John Buchanan married Jane "Jennie" Trindle prior to 1758 in Pennsylvania. He and his family were early settlers of Nashville having arrived 14 December 1778. He was the father of five children, John (Major), Jane "Jennie" who married James Todd, Alexander, Samuel, Nancy who married James Mulherin. Alexander was mortally wounded by Indians during the attack known as "The Battle of the Bluffs" on the French Lick Station on April 2, 1781, and died shortly thereafter. Samuel was killed about 1783 a mile below the fort (Buchanan Station) on Mill Creek.

His grandson Henry was elected to the legislature of Tennessee in 1875 and his great grandson John Price Buchanan was elected to the legislature in 1886 and 1888 and elected Governor of Tennessee in 1890.

John Sr. was killed by the Indians in his cabin near the fort (Buchanan Station) in April 1787. His death is recorded in the State Records of North Carolina as of April 1787, in the list sent by Anthony Bledsoe of those killed around Nashville.Jane is believed to have died after 1792 at Buchanan Station on Mill Creek.

Both Jane and her husband John are believed to be buried in the Buchanan Station Cemetery on Mill Creek along with sons,Samuel, Alexander, and Major John and probably her daughter, Jane Buchanan Todd. One report says that the center of the cemetery where there is a bushy area with broken stones is the last resting place of Jane and John.
