The Reverend W. Carroll Brooke, 86, of 5409 Lakeland Drive, Roanoke, died at home on August 15, 1991 following a six month illness. Mr. Brooke came to Roanoke in 1962 to be Priest-in-Charge of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church. It was his fourth parish congregation in a ministry of more than forty years. Born in Washington, D.C. on April 12, 1905, he was the elder of two sons born to Albert Golay Brooke and Mary Alice Byers Brooke. His father owned and operated one of the last livery stables in the nation's capital and Mr. Brooke maintained a love and interest in horses throughout his life. He was educated at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. and the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria. He was ordained to the Priesthood on July 3, 1932 and served his first parishes, Calvary Episcopal Church and The Church of the Redeemer for four years in the West Virginia coal mining areas of Montgomery and Anstead, respectively. Following, in 1935, he accepted a call to the rectorship of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Weston, W.Va. where he served another four years. On December 1, 1939, Mr. Brooke became the Rector of historic Trinity Church in Staunton, Va., where he held tenure for 22 years. While serving Trinity, Mr. Brooke also served the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia in a number of capacities: he was a member of the Diocesan Executive Board and a Trustee of the Covington Boys Home; he headed the Diocesan Department of Christian Social Relations and served as its representative for some years and served on the Virginia Council of Churches. His last call, as Vicar of the newly organized Mission of St. Elizabeth's in Roanoke, resulted in this congregation's reaching Parish status and becoming fully self-supporting by 1970, when Mr. Brooke retired. He continued in the service to his church for another ten years for Supply Clergy for Episcopal Services throughout the Diocese, most particularly to St. Paul's Church in Martinsville, Va., and as Parish Counselor at St. Paul's Church in Salem, Va. Throughout his ministry, Mr. Brooke was an active advocate for social change and made many contributions in that area. In the early 40's he testified before the Virginia Assembly and the State Hospital Board for mental health reform. As chairman of the Virginia Council of Churches, Department of Christian Social Relations, he presented the resolution supporting the Supreme Court decision banning segregation in the public schools in 1955. During that period he was among the speakers urging the House Courts of Justice Committee to endorse bills imposing repeal of State Segregation Laws. He was an early member of the Southern Regional Council. He was also an early board member of TAP and President of the Roanoke Council on Human Relations. Mr. Brooke is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Edwards Brooke; two sons, Walter Carroll Brooke, Jr., Fort Washington, Penn.; Robert Edwards Brooke, Rockville, Md.; one daughter, Anne Brooke Carpenter, Roanoke; three grandsons; four granddaughters; one great-granddaughter. A Requiem Eucharist will be held on Sunday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, Va. Interment of ashes is to be in Trinity Church Yard, Staunton, Va. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Boys Home, Covington, Va. and to Full Circle Senior Services, a program of Catholic Charities of Southwestern Virginia in Roanoke.
