"Paul Cross" was born and baptized Louis Napoleon LaCroix, child of David LaCroix and Elisabeth Fournier in Levis County, Quebec. His father died two years later and subsequently he along with his mother, his elder sister Adele, and his elder brother Eugene LaCroix, all moved to Maine. His mother remarried to Joseph Paradis, who was a widower with children in the Old Town area. His elder brother Eugene married Marie Luce Plourde of Van Buren and that couple lived in Gorham, NH for many years, then settled in Livermore Falls, ME.

Both "Paul" and his brother frequently "translated" their family name, LaCroix, to Cross once they had moved to the US. Paul seems to have kept using it pretty exclusively, while his brother eventually reverted to using LaCroix, but not before several of his children had been born and their births recorded under Cross. Of those children, all but one son eventually also reverted to using LaCroix exclusively. That one son, Pierre LaCroix, seems, like his father did, to have used both Pierre LaCroix and Peter Cross interchangeably but he too eventually reverted to LaCroix by the time of his death in 1966. But here again, Pierre's many children from two marriages were mostly recorded under the name Cross and many of the sons continued to use Cross.

After the mother of his children, Mathilda Dionne, died, Paul married the widowed niece of his sister-in-law Marie Plourde LaCroix. Her maiden name was Mary Thibodeau the daughter of Demerise Plourde Thibodeau. She was married and had children with Dennis Clavette before being widowed by his death. Eventually, after Paul's death in 1945, "Mary Cross" moved to San Diego, CA, traveling there alone via train at age 76. She lived to be 99 and half and died in 1968.
