The following is his service record, found in "NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS 1861-1865, Page 596 by Wayne Carver:

ARMSTRONG, JOLLY B. SERGEANT

Resided in Edgecombe Co. and was by occupation, a farmer, prior to enlisting in Edgecombe Co. at age 21, on April 24, 1861. Mustered in as sergeant. Present or accounted for until wounded at Lee's Mill, Virginia, April 16, 1862. Returned to duty in January - February 1863, present or accounted for until wounded in left leg at Bristoe Station, Virginia, Oct 14, 1863. Returned to duty on April 23, 1864, and present or accounted for until captured at the Appomattox River, Virginia, April 3, 1865. Confined at Hart's Island, New York Harbor, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking an Oath of Alligience.
