Mary Lou Harris, 79, of the Goodsprings Community in Athens, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at her residence.

A native of McMinn County, and a former resident of Louisville, Ky., she was a resident of McMinn County for the past 60 years. A daughter of the late Frank and Nellie Mae Zimmerman Bates, she was a member of Goodsprings Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Grace Harris.

Survivors include her husband, L.C. Harris of Athens; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Opal Bates; one sister-in-law, Cynthia Bates; several nieces and nephews; and her little dog, Ginger.

Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Burns and the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Goodsprings Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Wolfe, Buddy Jack, Stuart Raby, Phillip Tuggle, Andy Leslie and Gary London.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bordwine Funeral Home of Etowah is in charge of arrangements.
