George Kemp purchased an 80 acre farm 2 miles east and 1/4 mile north of Barryton as a homestead. He built and operated a planing mill in Barryton north of the river. In 1896 he was found dead in his mill. Two of his sons, Will and George, returned from Idaho to Barryton to operate the planing mill. This mill operated until at least 1908. The mill was very successful and operated under the name Kemp Brothers Wood Manufacturing.
When the wood supply dwindled in the Barryton area, the brothers went west again and George and his son operated a shingle mill in Port Angeles, Washington.
