Vernon M. Gill 96 of Garden City died Saturday December 01, 2012, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday December 04, 2012 at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Texas.

He was born in Nolan County to Bob and Clara Holloway Gill. Vernon moved to Glasscock County in 1928 and graduated from Garden City High School in 1933. In 1935 he moved to Sterling County where he met Glenda Cox. They married March 17, 1937.

Vernon worked on Claude Collins' ranch southwest of Sterling City from 1935 to 1945 and was the foreman for six years. In 1945 he moved his family back to Garden City. He and Glenda owned and operated the local drug store/general store from 1952 to 1972 and he was the Garden City Postmaster from 1950 until he retired in 1982.

All his adult life he ranched. He said regardless of what other work he did he never could get ranching out of his system.

Survivors include his wife Glenda Gill of Garden City; one daughter Marceline Wright and husband Harold of Euless; two sons Waymon Gill and wife Virginia of Amarillo and Van Gill of San Marcos; three grandsons Tracy Gill, Eric Wright and Steven Wright; two great-granddaughters Brooke and Mallory Gill; and one great-grandson Dylan Wright.

He was preceded in death by parents Bob and Clara Holloway Gill; one sister; and two brothers.
