Mary Susan Sandell, 20, was a stewardess on Northwest Orient Flight 705 (a Boeing 720B). At 1:35 p.m. EST on Tuesday, February 12, 1963, Flight 705 took off from Miami International Airport bound for Chicago and Portland, OR. There were 35 passengers and eight crew on board. Approximately 15 minutes later, the wreckage of the Boeing 720B was scattered over a wide area of the Everglades.

Flight 705's last communication advised that it was climbing through 17,500 feet. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft went out of control in severe turbulence. Captain Roy Almquist's efforts to recover control resulted in
structural failure. The plane broke up as it plummeted, all four engines separated, and fuel tanks exploded. (Witnesses on the ground saw an explosion and fire in the sky.) There were no survivors.

At the time of her death, Sandell lived at 4724 Colfax Avenue S. in Minneapolis.
