JOHN ATKINS WILL BE LAID TO REST ON THURSDAY
Aged Farmer Dead After Long Period of Failing Health; Service at Methodist Church

John A. Atkins, age 77, shot himself through the left temple with a .22 calibre rifle Monday, December 30, near the noon hour. Mr. Atkins, a prominent farmer northwest of Haxtun for 28 years, had been failing in health for several years and last summer was hospitalized for three months in Denver. Because his condition was constantly growing worse and he feared he might have to return to a hospital it is thought he took this means of escape.

He and a son, Lawrence, have been living on the home place alone. Lawrence had gone to the field about 9:00 o'clock Monday morning, returning about noon. He found his father in the living room breathing heavily and near death. He summoned Dr. J.W. Kinzie immediately but before the physician arrived Mr. Atkins died. Robert M. Jackson, Logan County coroner, was summoned and pronounced the death a suicide.

Mr. Atkins was born in Minock, Illinois August 13, 1869. When but a small boy he moved with his parents to Adams, Nebraska. In 1902 he married Miss Stella Garrison and six sons were born to this union. In 1917 he moved his family to the farm four miles northwest of Haxtun where he has since resided. Mrs. Atkins passed away in 1918. He later married Minnie Wood Leach, who preceded him in death on July 2, 1945.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, January 2, at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church in Haxtun, of which he was a member. Rev. Paul K. Corley, pastor of the church will have charge of the service.

Surviving are his six sons, Lawrence, Lyle, Eldred and Wilbur of Haxtun and Lloyd and Earl of Fleming, a sister, Mrs. Edith Johnson of Early, Iowa, nine grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral arrangements are by the Radford Funeral Home of Haxtun.

Interment will be in the Haxtun Cemetery.
