Louis J. Wortham, legislator and journalist, was born probably in November 1858. From 1909 to 1915 he represented Tarrant County in the House of the Texas Legislature. A son of the editor of the Sulphur Springs Gazette, he also became a newspaper man, worked on various Texas journals, and for a time edited Current Issue, a weekly journal of comment in Austin. Wortham was one of the founders of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram,qv and served as editor of that paper until 1923. His five-volume History of Texas from Wilderness to Commonwealth was published in 1924. Wortham was married to Fru Becton in 1880; they were parents of two children. After her death in 1922, he married Ollie Wilson. Wortham died at his home in Greenville on September 10, 1927.
