OBIT from Jacksonville Times-Union Newspaper: Mrs. Pernina Mathis, 100, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on June 22, 2009. She was a member of Greater Grant Memorial A.M.E. Church, Rev. Tony D. Hansberry, Pastor. Survivors include: one son, Oscar Mathis; two daughters, Thelma Jones and Valencia Drumgo; two daughters- in-law, Gwendolyn and Vera Mathis; twenty three grandchildren; a host of great and great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at her church. The cortege will assemble at the church at 9:45 a.m. Visitation of friends at the mortuary on Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and in the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Interment in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by: JAMES GRAHAM MORTUARY, INC., 3631 Moncrief Road.

Reflections Life: Perninia B. Mathis was born on the 7th of Janurary 1909 to Oscar and Mary Hutson in St. George, SC. She had one brother, Oscar M. Hutson, Jr.. When she was about 5 years old, the family migrated to Jacksonville, FL and it was there she remained for the rest of her life.

Although Pernina did work outside of the home for a few years, her main focus of life was being a devoted wife and a mother. Her 6 children include: Mrs. Thelma Jones, Mr. Laverne (Gwendolyn) Mathis, Mr. Ronnie (Vera) Mathis, Mr. Oscar Mathis, Mrs Nathanna Green, and Ms. Valenica Drumgo. Besides her husband, three of the children were predeceased: Ronnie, Nathanna, and Laverence.

In remembering the life of Pernina Mathis, one must mention her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a life-long member of the Greater Grant Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church serving on various committees. She enjoyed Christian music and spent many hours listening to gospel radio stations or Christian TV stations. Every Christmas she would make a Birthday Cake for Jesus and a party for Him was held with candles and singing "Happy Birthday".

Beside these activities, Pernina enjoyed gardening, writing poetry, working cross word puzzles, and attending activities at the Moncrief Senior Center.

For thirty years, Pernina made her home on the Northside of Jacksonville in the neighborhood of Lake Forest. In her final years, she was a resident at Lakeside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
