"23 of November, our regiment being on picket.
The enemy formed and charged us and by flanking us captured a large number of our regiment and drove the remainder of of Bald Hill. "He that fights and runs away will live to fight another day." Captain William R. McAdory was killed on this ridge and 12 of Company H were captured. "
"Three standard bearers were killed bearing the 28th Regimental flag and Captain William R. McAdory was killed beneath it at Orchard Knob. At the close of that battle, Chaplain Graham wrapped it around him, beneath his clothing, and carried him away."
