LITTLE BOYS MEET TERRIBLE
DEATH IN FIRE AT NESSON

Feb 24, 1911
FIRE DESTROYS HOME OF ALFRED HARTSOCK
NESSON VALLEY AND TWO SMALL BOYS
ARE BURNED TO DEATH

One of the most terrible and distressing accidents ever reported in this part of the country occurred last Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs Alfred Hartsock when their two boys were burned to death in their home.
Mr. Hartsock was away from home at the time. Mrs.Hartsock had been out for a short time attending to the evening chores and left the two boys, John L. and Merion A. up stairs and the little baby girl [Sylvia Jane] down stairs. When she started for house she saw that it was on fire. She rushed into the house and started up the stairs. The eldest boy started to come to her and she told him to run down stairs. Instead of doing this he ran into another room up stairs. In a few seconds, so rapidly did the flames spread, she was unable to reach either of the boys and all she could do was get the little girl and leave the house.
Mr. Hartsock, father of Alfred, soon arrived on the scene with one of his sons but they were unable to get the little boys out. They succeeded in carrying a few things out of the front room down stairs and they had to stand back and watch the building burn, powerless to help the little ones inside.
Funeral services were held at the home of Alfred Hartsock's father Monday afternoon and the funeral sermon was delivered by Elder D. F. Landis. The funeral was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends and relatives who grieve with the father and mother in their hour of trial.
