He was born in Trammel, Virginia to John Christian and Pearl Ramsey Phillips, and attended schools in Trammel. He belonged to the Virginia National Guard. He arrived in Globe/Miami, Arizona in 1943 following Basic Training. He and a group of soldiers with mining experience were sent to assist with manpower in the local copper mines where production was hampered by the lack of experienced miners. He married Juliet Cabral in January 1944. He was a Ripper at Miami Copper Company until he was recalled to active service in August 1944. He served with the 125th Infantry, and was shipped from Washington state on Feb. 23, 1945. His son Claude was born on Feb. 21, 1945, and he was able to call just before he disembarked and learned the good news. He participated in the Battle of Okinawa, where he was killed in action on May 20, 1945. He received several Sharpshooter Medals and was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
