ATHENS – A memorial service for Edith Books, 95, Athens is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Monday at First Baptist Church in Garden City with Rev. Kolby Abney officiating. A private burial will precede the service at Garden City cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home in Athens.

Mrs. Books died September 21, 2012 in her Athens residence.

She was born December 6, 1916 in Garden City to the late Henry S. and Eva L. Calverley Currie. Following graduation from Garden City High School she attended Hardin-Simmons University for three years.

Edith resided in Junction 17 years before moving to San Angelo in 1965. She had been a resident of Athens since 1969. Edith was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Chancel Choir. She formerly was active with Meals-On-Wheels.

Mrs. Books was preceded in death by her husbands, James Marshall Cook and Morris Books.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda Nix Davis and husband Richard of Athens, Darla K. Bennett of Tyler; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; devoted caregiver, Betty Luna; and her loving canine companion, Precious Angel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Edith may be made to the Henderson County Food Pantry, P.O. Box 2062, Athens, TX 75751 or the Henderson County Humane Society, P.O. Box 162, Athens, TX 75751, or the Disciples Clinic, 604 York Street, Athens, TX 75751.
