U.S. Congressman. He taught school in Prussia, immigrated to America in 1847 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. There he studied law, became an editor of several news papers in St. Louis and relocated to New York City in 1852. He was appointed commissary general of subsistence for the State of New York, in 1863, was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1864 and New York City coroner in 1874. In 1877, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was Auditor in the United States Treasury Department, (1885-89), fire commissioner in New York City in 1889 and was auditor of the of the New York Fire Department from 1891, until his death at age 74.
